ERIC M. DOBRUSIN gained admission to the State Bar of Michigan in 1988, and thereafter became registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as a patent attorney. Mr. Dobrusin graduated cum laude in 1985 from both the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) College of Engineering (Materials and Metallurgical Engineering), and cum laude in 1988 from Wayne State University Law School (Detroit, MI). Mr. Dobrusin has co-authored with Ronald Krasnow, “Intellectual Property Culture: Strategies to Foster Successful Patent and Trade Secret Practices in Everyday Business”, Oxford University Press (2008), a second edition of which shall publish in early 2012. Mr. Dobrusin also has co-authored, with Professor Katherine White, “Intellectual Property Litigation – Pretrial Practice”, (2nd ed. 1999 and 3rd ed. 2008) Aspen Law & Business. He authored the first edition, which published in 1996.
As a founder and shareholder of Dobrusin & Thennisch PC, and more than twenty years of experience, Mr. Dobrusin concentrates his practice in patent counseling and strategic patent prosecution, with particular emphasis in the fields of materials science (including plastics, ceramics, metals and electronic materials), biomedical technologies, battery technologies, and automotive technologies. Mr. Dobrusin has been active through the years in alternative dispute resolution (ADR) for intellectual property disputes. He previously served as Executive Director of the National Patent Board, an ADR organization having Rules that he helped to draft, and which are now administered by the American Arbitration Association. He also has been appointed and served in United States District Court patent litigation as a Special Master, and as an independent neutral for multiple alternative dispute resolution proceedings. Mr. Dobrusin is on the List of Mediators for the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Arbitration and Mediation Center in Geneva. In 1999, Crain’s Detroit Business Magazine selected him as one of “40 Under 40” up and coming business people in Southeast Michigan. Mr. Dobrusin has been honored by The Best Lawyers in America®, as a Michigan Superlawyer®, and as a “Top Lawyer in Metro Detroit” (by dbusiness magazine).
Mr. Dobrusin also serves as a Board Member for two non-profit organizations. He enjoys spending his free time with his wife, two sons, and their two rescue dogs. Mr. Dobrusin enjoys playing squash and running, training regularly to compete in half-marathons.
